Project 3 Model Presentation

This gallery does not only facilitate the interaction between the "interactive" sculptural installations. But also celebrates the interaction between the participants inside the art gallery. This can be seen through the interweaving of gallery rooms into the central internal sculptural garden and by the overlapping balcony level floor plates which allow an interaction across the span of the gallery space, which plays an integral role to encourage the interaction between the visitors, making the gallery visit a even more enjoyable experience.
The lighting of the gallery plays a big role in the experience of the building. The lighting of elevated floor plates creates a sense of glowing suspended elements, which carries on from the notions of the artworks depicted. Further more the large suspended balcony levels on each of the floors emphasises this notion of lightness.

The open area on the ground level functions as an interior sculpture garden. This was inspired by the other precedent studies of the garden space infront of art galleries such as the Art Gallery of NSW and other buildings like Louis Kahn's Exeter Library. The notion of a garden experience is transposed into the interior extrance of my sculptural gallery which incorporates the Platonic notion of having a garden to facillitate the transistion between the outside street into the tranquility of the Sculptural Gallery.Sectional model showing the interweaving of spaces and open circulation of the gallery building

The Gallery utilises structurally sound, load bearing walls on the sides of the sandwiched building to create a vast open space in the centre. This along with the use of columns that run on an axis enables the whole floor plate structure to be stable on it's own, and so enables the notion of having a very dynamic, flexible interior. As all the inner walls are flexible partitioning systems, which is very benificial in a gallery setting as it easily allows the gallery to accomodate for different sculptural exhibitions.

The large spacious open area on the ground level functions as an interior sculpture garden. From examining other precedent studies of art galleries such as the Art Gallery of NSW and other public buildings such as Louis Kahns Exeter Library we can see that they all embrace the notions from the historic Plato's Garden. This garden experience is carried on into the interior extrance of my sculptural gallery to further enhance Plato's notion of relaxation and helps facillitate the transistion between the outside street into the tranquility of the Sculptural Gallery.

Project 3 Preliminary draft designs + site analysis

Site analysis

The positioning of the site enables wide street exposure as it is located near the intersections of 3 main roads, drawing public attention. The site also sits on on wide street frontage, to further benifit the wide street exposure.

Project 3 Artworks & Gallery Spaces

Style of Art works to be Displayed in Gallery
Suspended and kinetic sculptural installations

The notion of suspension and the play against gravity was a major influence on my design to create a sense of lightness and a sense of floating spaces and elements, as it can be seen from the series of discrete suspended sculptural elements below.

Nike Savvas - Atomic Love

Marvin -Tarpon

The use of balcony spaces and a series of overlooking ramps and stairs allows the viewer to experience a 360 degree view of each sculptural installation piece. This also further creates a sense of suspension as it elongates the experience for the participant as they travel between levels of the building and are allowed to overlook onto the suspended artworks as if they were part of them.

Inspirational building elements

Rojkind Arquitectos and Copenhagen architects BIG - Museum overlooking Mexico City

Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas Architects-Foligno Italy Church
The church utilises the notion of structurally sound load bearing walls on the side of the building to create open space in the centre. This has played a role in my design as the gallery also utilises solid load bearing walls of the sandwiched site, along with the use of columns to enable a flexible interior space with flexible partitioning.

Daniel Statham Architects -Harajuku Box House a residential and retail project in Tokyo-

This was an inspirational use of a sandwiched site which extended its facade in line with the rest of the street, rather than setting it back, and utilised the shape of the site well to provide a series of overlapping spaces that had a articulate program structure and circulation paths.
